For a while there Mark and I were thinking about moving, not for job or family reasons, just to be in a place where we can get more for our money. We looked local and out of state to see just how much we could afford and what kind of place we could get. We're still planning to look locally since our homeowners' association is nuts (that's another post entirely), but I still like checking things out in other areas as well, even though there's no plan for a long distance move.
Knowing other places to check out can be difficult though. That's why I like to use Find Your Spot to get ideas on cities to look at. It asks all sorts of questions of you, from religious preference, price range and recreational interests to how near you want to be to airports and hospitals. It's a pretty extensive questionnaire that generates dozens of results.
I've gotten some vastly different answers depending on what options I click, but my most recent search yielded the following top five results:
Who'd have thought to check out Anchorage, Alaska? And yet, check out this "Charming chalet-style home on beautiful south-facing hillside with stunning, unobstructed, panoramic views of Kachemak Bay!" It only has 2 bedrooms and 1.5 baths, but with 3.5 acres of space there'd be plenty of room to add on.
So go on, find your spot, and come back and let me know what you found!
