Olympic Fever

Do you have it? I do. My sister does. So do our friends and family. We love all things Olympic and have started to think about what we'll do to celebrate this year's games. Traditionally, we have a meal during the opening ceremony that is reflective of that games' host country, so this year it'll be cottage pie. And we rank each country's "costume" during the opening ceremony with a 5 ring rating system. Yup, we literally hold up papers with 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 rings to reflect how much we like their garb. But, given that my sister hosted a fantastic Harry Potter party recently, and given that Charlotte's birthday parties (year two, three and four) have been pretty awesome, if I do say so myself, we've got the up the ante. So I've been doing a little research. Here are some fun Olympics ideas that we may do, and you should consider doing them too:

* Looking at great moments in Olympic history is sure to get you in the mood, and you could read through them as a part of your celebration. Kerry Strug pulling it out for USA gymnastics anyone?!

* You could serve some Olympic themed cupcakes, and play games like pass the torch, and Olympic bingo

* These invites would be super-cute for getting the word out about your party

* Your guests will love you if you served this Olympic ring fruit pizza

* And these photo booth props would be perfect for adults or kids

* It's pretty pricey, but Ursula Hitz's Game Torch 2012 is really awesome

* Love Rachel Whiteread's Olympic art (number 3 in the link) and it's something you and your kids could make easy enough

* Speaking of kids, Red Ted Art's Blog has tons of ideas for activities to do with them

* How about celebrating by dressing up yourself, maybe with a themed hat

Whatever we decide to do, I'll be sure to share the awesomeness right here. :)

Partying, Harry Potter Style

My friends (myself included) are dorks. We are completely, totally unashamed of this fact. And we love a themed party. Any excuse to be excessive is jumped at and this past weekend was no different. The Harry Potter fans in our group have decided to hold a month long movie marathon, in which they watch two movies per sitting and enjoy a meal together. My sister was up first and she is the queen of going overboard. I could give you tons of examples from her life, but figure I'll just let the pictures of this particular event do the talking. Below is a look at her condo, all dressed up for The Sorceror's Stone and the Chamber of Secrets.

Your first peek in the doorway was of Platform 9 3/4. She created this vignette by painting bricks onto kraft paper and hanging it to cover the entire length of the wall. A handpainted Hogwarts Express sign, coupled with a plastic lantern thingie (technical term) that we found at the thrift store really set you up for the awesome that awaited you in the rest of the room. But before you could move on, you needed to be sorted. The graphic in the white frame tells you to choose a card to find your house and you were also free to help yourself to a lemondrop. But, of course, danger was lurking everywhere and you'd best watch out for the devil's snare on the lower shelf.

Rounding the corner was the potions table. She took some of her regular artwork down and replaced it with a bulletin board full of recipes, a thrifted candlabra and a set of scales. A witch's cauldron was the perfect ice bucket and a butterbeer mug (direct from Universal Studios) held straws. Drink up!

On the opposite side of her living area is where the movies were shown. My sister has always had a gallery wall above her couch, but in true Mandy style, she swapped a few things out to keep with the theme. She made most of the things you see, but did purchase the Hogwarts and Quidditch prints here (they go with a third print that she had hanging in her bathroom). My favorite of the bunch is the signed head shot of Professor Lockhart. I mean, right?!

From there, if you look off to the left you'll see a bookcase filled with Harry Potter items, along with a snack trolley next to it. The bottom shelf has some plants and a gardening book, in keeping with that shelf's herbology theme. The middle shelf focuses more on potions and the top shelf is a mish mash of leftovers, including the elderwand (my dad's from Universal Studios).

My sister borrowed the trolley from yours truly. It housed a boatload of goodies. She got a frog candy mold to create her own chocolate frogs, used Ferrero Rochers and gold vellum to make golden snitches and made sure she had some Ton-Tongue toffee on hand too. She even switched out the art in a frame to say 'Anything off the trolley?' Yeah, I wasn't kidding about the whole going overboard thing.

Last up in the tour is the meal itself. Mandy is a great cook, so it's no surprise that she whipped up a full-blown meal for this event. Roast chicken, peas, carrots, brussel sprouts (a crowd favorite - for real), mashed potatoes and a Gryffindor trifle. It's the dessert you can just spy in the second photo in this next group. It's layers of pound cake, cool whip, raspberries and peaches. It's the raspberries (red) and peaches (yellow) that really make it Gryffindor. Oh, and did I forget to mention that she strung up candles (some real, some battery-operated) to create her own Great Hall. Yup. She did.

Awesome, right?! Now we just have to figure out what sort of crazily themed event we need to do next. The Olympics are just around the corner. Hmmmmm...

Flower Party Fun

Charlotte's 4th birthday party was a blur, to say the least. It felt like it crept up on me quickly and then started and ended quickly too. I didn't do nearly the planning that I have for other parties, but with the help of my mom and sister we did give my girl a great time.

Weeks ago Charlotte requested a flower party and it was easy to oblige. My sister added cupcake liners to twinkle lights to make a garland for the sunroom. My mom made the tissue paper flowers that hang from our ginormous umbrella. (Seriously. It's huge. It covers almost the entire patio.) And I picked up some flowers from Costco and combined them with some from the yard to make arrangements for all the tables. I think my favorite of the flowers were the tiny purple ones I found in the garden. I'm pretty sure they're weeds. :)

The goal for the food was just that it be yummy. So we served up deli sandwiches from Costco, along with PB&J for the kids, pasta salad (thanks Mandy!), bean and corn salad (thanks Mandy!), corn on the cob (thanks Mom and Dad!) and loads of fruit. The plastic produce containers I just snagged at Target were perfect for the occasion. Love them!

After we ate we unleashed the kids, small and large, on the yard. It was around 90 degrees earlier in the day (thankfully, the party started at 5pm, so it had cooled some), but the kiddie pools and Target dollar section squirters were much appreciated. The wiser ones in our bunch (take note, that's mostly ladies) situated themselves safely on the patio side of the yard.

It didn't take all that long for the kids to be too exhausted, or too cold (or both) from the water play, so we refueled with dessert. I made pudding cups with crushed oreos, sprigs of mint from the yard and wooden spoons. My hope was that they'd look like potted plants with wooden plant markers. What do you think? And the cake was bought at Safeway. I just added some crepe paper flowers to the top. Yum! Well, the cake was yum. I didn't try the flowers. ;)

Then it was present time. As usual, we were overwhelmed at how gracious our friends and family are. Charlotte received some great loot, mainly of the Barbie and LaLaLoopsy variety. My personal favorite was the Charlotte doll that Mark and I got her (from Princess and the Frog). She's just so darn cute. Charlotte really loved everything, and has played with it all, but her current fave (two days post party) is the dollhouse I found her at an antique mall (and, of course, didn't get a picture of). It was a steal at $10. She and I plan to redecorate it and have our work cut out for us since it's about 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Eesh!

All told, we had a really great time! The weather was hot, but not unbearable. The food was yummy, the fellowship was incomparable and my little girl was well-loved. Ahhhh... success. But, I'm exhausted, so this is the last you'll hear from me this week. I plan to be back to the regular swing of things next week.

P.S. Interested in seeing Charlotte's previous parties? Here's the Peter Pan party from last year and the Charlie & Lola party from the year before.
